Types
of Mesothelioma
Tumors of the mesothelium may
be benign or malignant. Benign
tumors are relatively harmless.
Malignant tumors are extremely
dangerous, because they will spread
to other areas of the body over
time. The term “mesothelioma”
is generally understood to refer
to malignant mesothelioma. The
area of the mesothelium most likely
to develop a malignant tumor is
the pleura, or the lining of the
chest cavity surrounding the lungs.
When this occurs, the victim is
diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma.
About ten percent of victims initially
develop tumors in the abdominal
region, or peritoneum. This results
in a diagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma.
Very rarely, the cancer may originate
in the mesothelium around the
testicles or the heart cavity.
As with all cancers, it is possible
for the disease to spread to other
areas of the body.

Did
you know: Scientists
are developing new methods of
attacking cancer. Because mesothelioma
is a rare form of cancer and does
not respond well to conventional
treatments, the FDA allows pharmaceutical
companies to try new compounds
on mesothelioma patients.

Fact:
In the past two years, about 5000
Americans have been diagnosed
with mesothelioma.
